Updated: Jun 2, 2022

What's Cellulose Sponge?

Cellulose sponges are made from organic materials like wood pulp or fibers. Cellulose sponge manufacturers provide consumers with a wide range of products. Both natural and man-made sponges are available in the market these days. These are used for multiple purposes i.e. from cleaning faces to protecting floors and furniture.

These come in different shapes, colors, and some make perfectly cute gifts as well. These are highly environment friendly and are easily biodegradable sponges.

Why Buy Cellulose Sponges?

●Due to their natural fibers, these are excellent absorbers and can hold liquids well.

●These are relatively wear-resistant and can do hard cleaning.

●From usual bathroom cleaning to everyday spills, cellulose sponges outperform other alternatives.

●These can be cut in different shapes and sizes suited for cleaning every nook and corner.

●Cellulose sponges have been widely used in personal care e.g. skin exfoliation, removing masks, removing nail paints, cleaning the face while traveling, etc.

●Easy to carry because it doesn’t take up much space.

●Unlike its plastic alternatives, it is totally biodegradable and compostable.

●It has a heat resistance of up to 140℃, so it can work better in high-temperature environments.

Composition of Cellulose Sponges

Cellulose is a polymer found in plant cell walls. It provides shape and sturdiness to the cell. Cellulose is the chief component of cellulose sponges. It is mixed with sodium sulfate and hemp fibers for diverse properties. It is then heated, processed into different sizes, and bleached.

Naturally occurring cellulose sponges are purely made up of wood pulp or fibers. To keep these soft and germ-free these are treated with soap before use.

Cellulose Sponges are Eco-Friendly

Both natural and synthetic cellulose sponges are compostable. Natural ones are totally organic in nature. Man-made cellulose sponges add additives that are usually also biodegradable.

Cellulose sponges which contain plastics are usually non-recyclable. So you should always go for greener sponges that are biodegradable and easy on the environment. The production of cellulose sponges is always green as no toxic by-products are produced. Any waste or excess raw material produced is used in the next batch. Hence almost zero waste.

Things to Consider While Using Cellulose Sponges

1. Due to their natural composition, cellulose sponges can confine small particles. If stayed trapped, these can cause spreading microbes and foul odor. In such situations, these should be discarded.

2. Cellulose sponges should not be used for cleaning juice spills or meat residues as these are sources of bacterial growth in the sponges.

3. Rinse the sponge thoroughly after every use.

4. Let it air dry.

5. If microwaving, make sure the sponge is always wet, otherwise it can be a fire hazard.

6. It is preferable to use different sponges for specific tasks i.e. different sponges for bathroom, furniture, kitchen face, etc.
